“Consumerizing” the Enterprise
How to Win Friends & Influence People, ver. 2.0

Now that Google, Flickr, and Netflix have raised expectations, you have a significant opportunity to apply proven web concepts to your enterprise information: Whether you’re marketing new technology, or looking for better ways to manage corporate performance.

Much More than MySpace at Work

Lots of people mistakenly assume that social media in the workplace means MySpace-like pages for everybody, and that it has nothing to do with enterprise-class information. But it’s actually quite the opposite: “Consumerizing” can make information much more visible and effective. The Big Tag concept is a way to do that, so information is more clearly:

  • Usable. People can quickly get the idea without digging through lots of detail.
  • Valuable. Attention stays focused on things that really influence results.
  • Believable. Information is explicitly structured, so people can see that
    it’s evidence-based.

You can use Big Tags to tell the world (or just your coworkers) about new innovations, recommendations, business intelligence, and other discoveries. They’re at-a-glance views you can attach to executive summaries, white papers, email, etc. – or add to portals, wikis, web pages, and online communities. Big Tag benefits. Get the attention of busy, influential people, giving them something tangible that quickly shows how things affect them. Substantial information can be captured as Big Tags rather quickly, so crucial knowledge is more widely available.

The network’s the thing. You can use Big Tags to connect and analyze social networks.

  • People can form groups to share Big Tags about specific topics.
  • You can track metrics you never had before. For example, find out what types of information people are really using, and identify high-activity areas.
